4.7 Quake Followed By 50 Aftershocks As Reno Keeps Rumbling
More than 50 aftershocks were recorded on the west edge of Reno after the largest earthquake in a two-month-long swarm of temblors dumped cans off shelves, knocked pictures off walls and pushed rocks off hillsides along the Sierra Nevada.

Many locals need to be educated about how to react during an earthquake. Going to a structurally sound doorway or underneath a sturdy piece of furniture are good ideas; running towards glass windows and doors in an effort to get outside is a bad idea as the glass may break causing serious injury. Also, running outside can have bad effects if the building collapses before one can get enough distance away from the falling debris. A sturdy exterior doorway is usually the best place to be.

My pets completely freaked out and I was jolted out of sleep. Half my apartment complex went outside. This morning (I work at a veterinary clinic) we had a few animals injured by broken glass and such. My friend has got a crack in her kitchen wall. I have to admit I'm scared.

I had just fallen asleep when the quake hit.My 16 month old daughter was in bed with me and she slept through the whole thing. The quake scared me. I went outside when it stoped and my neighbors where already out there.I walked to the corner store "Rainbow Mart" where one of my friend works to check on her,and to see if there was any damage there she told me that there was none the only thing that happened was a cup of coffee fell over.

I was in bed with my 2 children. I have been feeling all the current ones even just the little aftershocks. I am a single mom in an apartment and here alone with my children. I have been so scared. I am scared to stay in the bed so I grabbed my children and ran under the door jam of my bathroom. It was still going on by the time I got my kids outta bed which the other ones were over with by the time I reacted. My soaps in my bathtub fell over and some of my stuff in the cabinets got knocked over. Luckily I took all pictures down last night just before I went to bed. It felt much bigger than a 4.7. These earthquakes are scary and I hope they stop soon.

Husband was at work at 7-11 in northwest reno. The store lost alot of wine and some alchol. He had to close the store for a few hours to clean up the mess. He's fine other then the fact that he has a few bruises from the bottles flying off the shelf and hitting him as he was trying to get from behind the counter.

It was crary, this one lasted A while It felt more like A 5.0 coming from the bay area I should be used to it, but it's been a long-long time sence I felt an erthquick so I panic when I just need to relax. Well all I have left to say is im getting kits ready for my son and I because I just have a bad gut feeling that this aint the worst of earthquicks yet reno has to experience. I pray for the city that we don't ever have to experience the 1989 quick like the bay area, because it's nothing nice.

What a phenomenal experience! I was sitting at my work desk when the whole room began to move; my first reaction being, "why is this room moving?" Duh!!! Then it hit me...this is an earthquake! I had goosebumps for almost 10 minutes! It woke my husband up from sleep upstairs. We were just drifting off when the second one came. It just made me realize how "mortal" and small I was in the big scheme of things!

Our house is in Castle Rock, about a mile or 2 NE of Mogul. Our house shook extremely violently for about 30 seconds. Our buffet toppled over breaking just about all of our expensive wedding crystal as well as the buffet itself. One of the rods in a closet came loose and all the clothes hanging on it fell. A few paintings fell but did not break. Everything fell off the shelves in the storage closet in my office as well. One of my poor kitties is still terrified and hiding under the bed. Nobody was hurt, fortunately it was just some material posessions that were damaged. We just moved here from Atlanta and are definitely not used to this, I am absolutely terrified that something bigger may be coming but am praying with everything I've got that it won't.

My boyfriend & I were parked at Mt. Rose (East Bowl) when his vehicle started to shake at 11:41 pm. He ask me if I was shaking around & I said I wasn't. I was looking out the window, then turned to him & noticed he wasn't doing the shaking, either. No one else was up there & we knew it was an earthquake. I called home & my daughter said it woke her up & was making the bed shake. I called my sister in Reno, near Truckee River, & she said the shaking caused her dresser drawers to come open. My boyfriend called home, Stead, & his son said the dishes were rattling. We were raised in Southern California & are familiar with the ground shaking on occasion. The epicenter is always where the most damage is. We hope the people in the Mogul/Verdi area are doing alright.

I'm not trying to be too pessimistic here, but frequent measurable earthquakes in a short period of time have lead to historical volcanic eruptions. Some, being unknown volcanic sites. Am I being over my head about this? Or is this something that needs to be researched more on since no one knows what really is going on?

Strong shaking from 2nd story of corner condo at edge of ravine yesterday, last night, this morning and this most recent quake and aftershocks. Felt and sounded like a very rocky train as opposed to short, intense abrupt shakes felt in SE Alaska 20 years ago. I was sitting at my desk and after a few moments I was under my desk with my two dogs crowding in, too. It was a side to side shaking that increased in frequency and intensity for what seemed like a minute or two. The aftershocks followed and I huddled several more times under my desk. I continue to feel aftershocks. This most recent quake was by far the strongest however, the first quake was also quite strong. I think I know why my dogs have had upset stomachs this week as they are very concerned about all the movement and sound, barking at times. I've felt many quakes and this one takes the prize.

At around 11:43 pm I felt what was the greatest earthquake yet since these began. No one else in my family woke up which surprised me, but I live in a condo unit next to another unit, which is 3 stories including a garage. Sleeping on the top story, the building all of a sudden began to shake from north to south instead of west to east like past quakes. The walls and floors seems to just move as if on a sandy foundation, it was indeed the most oddest experience. But after about 5 seconds, everything stopped with some small aftershocks that followed but did little more than vibrate my bed. After the quake I immediately checked up on my kids and everyone was fast asleep. My wife was also sound asleep. Well of course I had to share my experience so I woke her up and explained the option of evacuation to which she mumbled something and went back to sleep. The only other thing I wish to mention was a distinct rumbling sound that I hadn't heard in past quakes.

WOW! That woke me andmy 5 year old daughter up from a sound sleep. Two pictures fell down and some of my daughters figurines. That was a strong one. Curious to know the magnitude and epicenter. With it being so quiet in the house, you could hear the ground rumbling, then the house started to shake like crazy. Everyone should make the effort to get an emergency kit together in their house, just in case these are leading up to something a lot more severe. We moved up here from the bay area and there is nothing worse than not being prepared when you need to be. The quake of 1989 in SF was like living through a nightmare. That is the quake where a piece of the Bay Bridge collapsed. The city of San Francisco was basically up in flames. Power was lost, phones were down, and it seemed that everything was on fire. Very scary. Let's hope for the best!!!!

The whole house and ground was moving. My Husband works off 4th and woodland and he says this earthquake was bigger than the 4.2 felt yesterday at 3:55pm. On channel 2 they are saying that this quake has been down graded and there is no way. I felt it in east carson city and I was in the quake in 94 in california and it was 6.9 and this was almost as scary.

The pets ran and hid, the floor shook and then the shaking got stronger. Pictures and knick knacks fell off the walls and shelves and standing statues on the floor fell over. The glass globes on my dining room hanging lights shook out of their holdings. There have been many after shocks, or continued rumblings, which are still continuing, though not as strong as the initial one at about 11:45. (it is now 12:45)

Definitely felt it here a mile east of Mogul. Drawers were opening and closing by themselves, the kitchen and bathroom cabinets flew open and spilled their contents everywhere, books were tossed off the shelves. My sister was outside smoking, standing a good four inches away from the house, and the house actually smacked into her. It felt like an eternity before the shaking stopped. I spent 8 years in SoCal until I moved here 2 years ago, and I've never been through anything like this. Certainly not this many earthquakes in so short a time period. It's especially worrying how the quakes seem to be building in intensity and frequency. I just wish we had a better idea what was going on and what to expect. How big are these earthquakes going to get?

We are in Spanish Springs near Pyramid and Sky Ranch. We definetly felt it. Everything was rocking back in forth in the closests over a minute after it happened. Too dark to go out and check for damage on the house. I do believe we felt two smaller ones since too. The biggest one felt like a big jolt and rocking. Woke everyone that was asleep in the house. I was awake and it rocked my chair enough that I felt I was going to fall out.

I was lying on my side in bed reading, and before I even realized what was going on I was in the floor next to the bed. The initial shock to the house actually threw me out of bed. There was quite a bit of shaking back and forth at first then it went into a wave type pattern. YOu could feel the the house had a roll sensation to it. Seemed like it was longer in length than the one I felt yesterday at 3:55. Just felt another small shake a few minutes ago at approx 12:30 a.m.. It was a slight shake for just a second or two.

That was the first 'big' earthquake of my life. I was sitting on my couch watching Will & Grace and all of a sudden my couch starts moving and I look up and my lamp and mirror are shaking. I think Holy Cow shouldn't I get to a doorway? I think it lasted for 5-10 seconds in total but I tell you my heart was racing after that! Also what was weird was that I could actually hear a low rumbling aside from the walls in my condo creaking. A suggestion is to give us tips on what we are supposed to do in a earthquake especially if we have gas heat. I have never lived in an earthquake zone and am a transplant to the area so if I could read up on that it would help me out greatly!

I live in a mobile home, and it was shaking really bad. Pictures were shaking on the walls and I could hear glasses in the drain board hitting each other. Lasted for what felt like minutes, but realistically was about 10-15 seconds. It woke up my pets who were sleeping around me. The earthquake made me realize how unprepared I am, if a larger one was to strike. I didn't duck under furniture or anything; I just laid on my couch saying "OH MY GOD!" I was scared that something was going to happen to someone else in my house, and my life literally flashed before my eyes. I was paralyzed with fear. I have never felt an earthquake like that. The fear of how I had no control at all in the situation was horrifying. The shaking was severe and it has definitely scarred me. I am scared for a larger earthquake to hit, and I hope that one doesn't. As dramatic as this may seem, this earthquake put my life into perspective: you could lose someone you love or you could lose your life at any time.

This was a strong one! I first heard something hitting? my windows--crackling noises. Then the sofa & floor moved up and back. My light fixtures, fans and hanging objects moved side to side with at least a foot of swing. I have never felt the ones that have been hitting the Reno area lately, but I did feel this one! I was watching Nightline and it happened about 11:40Pm. Nothing fell or was damaged here that I can tell. I will have to check outside in the daytime for cracks, etc. I have felt a real slight one in South Reno about 5 yrs ago when I lived on Patriot Blvd. in an apt. It was a very slight one then. I also felt a bigger one in of all places,New Jersey in the late 60's. We were on a fault line up there in Northwest Jersey. I thought the furnace blew up with the gigantic bang and movement of the house/walls then. This one had no bang but it had a lot of movement and was at least 10 sec. or more. This one scared me! I've moved my antiques off of shelves already!

My wife and I were jolted awake by this 5.0 earthquake we had near midnight. Being from Fallon, I had not experienced much in the way of quake activity, and I can honestly say that this was my first real experience. I was lying in bed watching TV. The dogs started barking. I thought my son had just come home. As I got up to see if it was actually him in the driveway, I noticed that the walls and floor were moving and vibrating a little. I thought about going to a doorway and just standing there, but the dogs and everything else calmed down by then. I then went to the front door to see if my son had actually arrived. I went outside to look for his truck. It wasn't there. I'm not sure if it was my imagination, but the sidewalk outside seemed to slant a little. I came back inside and noticed that both swag lamps were slightly swinging in the living room. I then got on the PC and went online to find out if there were any breaking news stories about the earthquake. I fully realize that there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop an earthquake, so whatever happens is beyond our control. Life in general is short and precious, so please treat your loved ones and others with kindness and respect.

I really felt this quake. I've lived in Nevada for 32 years and this is the strongest quake I have felt. The ground literally rolled under my chair. The furniture rattled slightly and the main shaking lasted at least 5 seconds. I felt swarming after-shocks for several minutes after the main shock.

Hi, Just thought I'd inform your station that I and my family felt this earthquake in Dayton, Nevada. We have, so far, not felt any of the previous earthquakes. It was pretty minor here. Basically it was a mild waving motion and chandeliers were swaying. I am from Bay Area and was in the 7.3 Loma Prieta quake of 89. We were 23 miles from the epicenter in that quake, and of course, this quake was very minor and didn't shake my nerves that much; however, I am hoping this isn't a prelude to a BIG one! I never want to experience that kind of magnitude again. Just thought I'd share Dayton's experience of the quake with you. Daryla

My husband and I were asleep when all of a sudden our bed started shaking violently. My husband said "Honey, we are having an Earthquake". I immediatley looked at the clock and it read 11:40p.m. We guess that our bed shook for about 5 to 7 seconds. I jumped out of bed when it was over and called my kids. No damage, nothing fell off walls. It has shaken me personally though. My heart is still pounding and I'm sick to my stomach. Don't know if I will be able to go back to sleep. I have been through lots of tornados and thought that was the worst, but with earthquakes, you can't see where they are and what direction they are heading. I have always felt lucky the last 12 years, living in the Reno area, with a feeling that mother nature avoided us. Boy was I wrong!

I felt 2 separate quakes. The first woke me up and was at least as strong as the 4.2 on Thursday. The second was much stronger. Things fell off walls in the house, the walls shook, books fell off the shelf. People (including me) went outside after it was over. I felt it was safer to be outside than in my apartment, since I live on the second story. The structure of the apartment shook during the second quake, and it felt unstable.

I live at Bristle Point Apartments and we felt it pretty strong there. No damage. It was hard to stand up while it was happening. I could hear a rumbling sound as it was happening. Other stations said it was a 4.9 centered in the same Mogul, Verdi area. But KOLO said it was a 5.0 and centered near Loyalton, California. How can you have such different locations?

As a fairly recent East Coast transplant, earthquakes are not a familiar sensation. I felt the rumble in feet and in my ears and looked up to see what appeared to be swaying walls. It wasn't until it was over that I realized what I had just experienced. After checking in with my girlfriend, who was in the back bedroom, I immediately pulled up the USGS website to confirm that I had, indeed, experienced my first earthquake. I finally have confirmation that all that plate tectonics stuff they talked about in geology class is real! As a resident of the East Coast, I could never be sure.

My paper shredder fell over and all the items in my shower fell into the tub. I ad a coffee cup that was only 1/4 full and there was a lot of coffee on my ottoman from it. was awakened by the first one at around 11:35ish. The entire house kind of rolled. The bed shook along with the pictures on the walls rattleing. The weights in the Grandfather clock that had been stopped for quite a while were banging back and forth on the sides of it. The second tremor came just a bit after the first, however it was not as large and the only sensation was that of the house "rolling". No glasswares or pictures came off of the walls and nothing broke during either one. The Grandfather clock weights and pendulum are still moving back and forth against the sides at 12:15 am some 35mins later

I was watching TV when it started to shake violently side to side. Dishes started to clatter together. As I headed for the upstairs to check on the family I was knocked off balence and fell on the stairs along with pictures on the wall. The roar and the rumbling got louder and louder. The book shelves started to creek and crackle from the shaking and items started to make their way to the edge. We have wind chims in the house that hang from the ceiling in various places these also started to make noise and left a very eary feeling. This was scary and a lot more serious than the last one. I hope they don't continue to get any bigger.

We felt the quake out here in the North Valleys for quite an extended period of time (shaking continued for nearly 30-40 seconds). I was in the living room of my home when the quake hit. There was a loud boom followed by what I thought to be about 10-15 seconds of minor shaking. No damage just significant sway in hanging lights, wind chimes, etc. As a side note, moments before the quake, my dog arose from a dead sleep looked around the room and laid back down seconds before the boom and shaking struck. Amazing. Very unusual activity that has taken place in the last 36 hours. I felt the 4.2 quake yesterday while playing golf at Washoe. Shook the cart and clubs pretty good. Makes you wonder if the "Big One" may be on the way.

This is the first of the recent rash of quakes we've actually felt. We had no damage - nothing fell off of our walls or anything. It didn't even wake our dogs up. It was a sudden jolt, then it dissipated - turning into a rolling sensation that lasted maybe 15 - 25 seconds. Our bedroom door wiggled on its hinges a bit, but other than that, there were no visible signs that anything had even happened.

We live in the Sierra Meadows area in Truckee, California. Nothing fell off shelves, or got knocked over. But we definitely felt the entire house shake.

Okay this one was the scariest yet, and I went thru the 89 quake! Sharp jolting and more rattling this time, lasted longer than yesterday's. Spices and boxed items fell over in kitchen cabinets, but no apparent damage that I can see inside. Will have to wait till morning to check outside. I am totally puzzled by how this is happening. I am used to a good jolt then small aftershocks that you really don't feel. Now it seems that every day the magnitude seems to be getting larger! I really hope with this one, closer to a 5 pointer that it will start settling things down!

Well we felt a small tremor at first and thought that was it. then it worsened to where we were losing our balance trying to get to a door jamb, and then it worsened still. my girlfriend fell and the shaking was violent. our 6 foot tall bookshelf and its contents are intact, though disheveled. items on our dresser fell over. no one hurt.

I was in my home watching a movie and felt a tremble. We looked and our artificial tree was moving. The shaking wasn't too bad it was a slight wave type movement, definitely side to side not an up and down movement. The shaking only lasted for about 10-15 seconds. At this point we have not felt any aftershocks.Luckily it was not strong enough to cause anything to break or fall. We waited until we felt it was safe to check, and looked outside and we didn't see any signs that anyone else was even aware of the event.

WOW I was reading about earthquakes online and the whole apartment shook, difficult to walk across to the wall for suupport. I heard glass breaking, pictures on wall all shifted, glass items fell off window ledge in kitchen and broke, wine bottles rolled from wine rack, windows rattled and so am I. This is getting very scary.

I live right near UNR in an apartment on the 2nd floor. I've been feeling all the quakes we've been having that have been about 2.0 or higher. I could kind of hear it coming. The sound came before the shaking and rolling. I could hear the dishes in the kitchen cabinet shaking, stuff fell off of the tops of some bookshelves, and all the pictures on my walls are now crooked. My cat freaked out and ran under my bed and my hamster was alert and kind of intrigued. I knew right away it was the biggest one we have had so far. I've felt (as writing this) about 3 aftershocks.

I heard a noise first and then my home starting to shake and I could hear the creaking of the walls. It only lasted a few seconds. It woke up others in the house and one person said it was the worse one they felt so far. Nothing fell or broke that I know of.

Definitely felt the earthquake tonight in Eastern Carson City. Just got my grandkids in bed, and I was reading the paper. Heard a little rumble then it felt like lying on a bowl of jello, more of a waving motion (like a waterbed but bigger.) No damage here just a shook up pair of cats, restless dog and owner!!

AT 5AM IN FALLON NEVADA, I FELT SOMETHING AT 5 AM, LIKE A EARTHQUAKE, A FRIEND WHO LIVES ABOUT 3 MILES FROM HE SHE SAID SHE FELT THE SAME THING AND HER DOG STARTED BARKING, I LIVE IN AN APARTMENT AND I THOUGHT SOMEONE FELL OUT OF BED,
We're out and about, traveling the Back-Roads of America, but we heard about the shaker taking place in Reno, I've been in touch with my Granddaughter, who is taking care of our residence, while we're gone, and she said, no damage, but she felt several of them. All is well, out here in the heartland of America, but it seems like every place we go, the people are saying, " spring is late this year " , we was in the Tulsa area a couple days ago, and they have had lots of rain this spring, everything is water-logged. I hope everything gets back to normal in the Reno area, --- From D n V Simar, on the Back-Roads of America.
Eh, I haven't felt a thing yet - I think maybe I am immune since I did grow up in Cali and have felt a dozen big ones ..atleast ! LOL let's rock n roll
I wasn't scared, I had turn off the T.V. I've in California, durning the 7.1 LOMA PRIETA IN SAN FRANCISCO, 1989. DO NOT PANIC! LIVING IN CALIFORNIA. YOU LEARN NOT BE SCARED. THE MOST IMPORTMANT IS CONSENCE & KNOW WHAT TO DO. AND LAST OF ALL "BE THANKFUL TO GOD" THAT YOU ARE OK. HOME & PERSONNELL ITEMS CAN BE REPLACE.
I was asleep when the quake first started. I felt it in my feet first then the next thing you know my whole bed was shaking. It felt like being in a canoe on extrmely choppie water. I looked over at my window and I could visible see it shaking to the point where it was about to break. Thankfully I took the pre-caution to put scotch tape across the window to stablize it incase it was to happen again from the first quake. I have just moved to reno and have never been through an earthquake of this magnitude. It actually has my nerves a little rattled, but things like this are innevitable.
The best way to be prepared is not to panic! The best earthquake prepare kit would be a 3-day supply of the following: 1 gallon of water per day per person, stocked first aid kit, non electric can opener, canned goods, flashlights, extra batteries, battery op radio, blankets, extra clothing, and your rx meds, also keep tylenol, benadryl, and dramamine as earthquakes can cause nausea/motion sickness. If you're inside, stay inside. If you're outside stay outside away from utility poles, trees, and tall buildings. Establish a meeting place with your family if you become separated. Above all...STAY CALM!
I was trying to fell asleep and my dogs start to barking and then i felt one last night at 11:40pm I was Scard.
We were sleep and i heard a noise lke some glass hiting each other and i felt the shake of the house i told the kids to wake up and go downstairs every body was scare"
any quakes in the dayton valley area?
This was the scariest thing I have ever been through. We were upstairs in our bedroom, when the big one hit. All I could think of is that we needed to get out of the house fast! Everything flew out of my roll top desk, vanity cabinet contents all over the bathroom floor, we have broken dishes, broken picture frames and art fell off the walls, all my shutters flew open. Truly frightening stuff!
i felt the quake and it really freked me ut born and raised in reno i have never felt an earthquake. i was wonder what i should do to help my family get ready for the big one they say is possible. if you know what i should do email me with the subject earthquake emergency kit. i am still feeling the aftershocks my siter took all of our nick nacks down and our shelves so that they wouldnt fall on us.
was sitting in my easy chair watching a movie and felt the the first one but the second one moved the hair i was sitting in spooky lol
Just to let you guys know, if there is an earthquake...DO NOT GO OUTSIDE!!!! You want to stay inside and stand in a doorway (the strongest structure of your house or apartment) DO NOT GO OUTSIDE!! It's much more dangerous b/c buildings and trees and other structures can fall and cause more damage. However, if you are in a large vacant field that would be the best. Just want everyone to know. I'm from California, and have been through many large earthquakes like these haha. Also, if you are in bed, make sure you stay in your bed and cover your head with a pillow. There are so "sure-fire" ways to protect yourself, but those are the tips I have always been taught. EVERYONE BE SAFE!!!!
i felt one last night and ran outside but it wasn't really big anyway thanx for the news. i'll keep an eye out for one
i was trying to fall a sleep and suddenly i heard a crack in my house and thought some one try to break in :D and a second later i felt my second floor room shake it was horrible :(
