RENO, Nev. (AP) - A swarm of earthquakes capped by a 4.2 magnitude quake rattled Reno on Thursday afternoon, shaking downtown buildings and putting residents on edge throughout the city.

UNR Seismological Lab

Some cracked windows and damaged roof tiles were reported in
northwest residential areas but there were no immediate reports of
injuries or major damage.

The 4.2 temblor hit at 3:55 p.m. and was centered six miles west of Reno, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It shook downtown Reno for about 30 seconds and caused buildings to sway.

"It was unnerving," said Wanda Lopshire, who was working at the downtown Washoe County District Court building. "It physically moved my body. I could feel things shaking."

The Geological Survey said a 4.1 magnitude trembler hit minutes earlier at 3:47 p.m.

In addition to the two most powerful quakes, more than 30 other small earthquakes were reported during about a two-hour period, including seven registering 2.4 and above.

The University of Nevada, Reno's seismology laboratory reported the two largest quakes were "widely felt" throughout Reno and neighboring Sparks to the east. It said that based on the magnitude
of the quakes, aftershocks can be expected for several days.

Stuart Smith, the head golf pro at Somersett Country Club located near the epicenter, reported "pretty violent shaking."

"Anytime you get a rattling like that, you are going to strike fear in some people," he said. "A couple of my employees were scared."

Only the two largest quakes were felt throughout Reno's downtown
casino and business district.

The USGS revised it's report on the size of those two as more detailed information was available later in the day. It originally reported the biggest one was a 4.1. It then raised it to 4.2, then at one point as high as 4.4, but now reports it was a 4.2. The 4.1 quake initially was reported to be a 3.8.

"It shook the whole house real good," said Rick Dinoso, a resident of the northwest part of town that has been rattled by dozens of smaller earthquakes since the end of February.

"This was the strongest one in the last two months. I was wondering whether I should grab the kid and get under the table," he said. "You could see the sides of the house swaying."

Reno police spokesman Steve Frady said there were no immediate
reports of significant damage.

"We felt it over here, but nothing came off the walls," he said from police headquarters on the east edge of downtown. "The (police) radio has been relatively quiet considering."

Elsewhere in Nevada, a 3.6 earthquake hit at 5:47 p.m. in the northeast part of the state about 38 miles southeast of Elko and a 3.0 temblor struck at 12:33 a.m. in west-central Nevada about 26 miles south of Tonopah.

The quakes around Reno occurred in an area where scores of smaller ones have been centered in recent weeks. Temblors of magnitude 2 and higher have been occurring about every three days since a swarm of widely felt earthquakes began Feb. 28, said John Anderson of the University of Nevada, Reno's seismology laboratory.

"Since April 15, there have been three a day," he said.

Anderson said the bulk of them appeared to be centered just west
of Reno near the U.S. Interstate 80 interchange for Mogul.

Earthquake magnitudes are calculated according to ground motion recorded on seismographs. An increase in one full number - from 6.5
to 7.5, for example - means the quake's magnitude is 10 times as great.

A quake with a magnitude of 6 can cause severe damage, while one
with a magnitude of 7 can cause widespread, heavy damage.

Felt only one here. Last one we had a few years back, dog went crazy--this time neither dog nor cats reacted. Just a short jiggle with a lot of groaing and creaking of the house. Not bad at all, this time!!

Posted by: Leo Chong Location: mountain top near UNR on Apr 25, 2008 at 07:40 AM
I live near UNR on a mountain top. I only felt one of the quakes. The mountain must have absorb the shaking. It's so expensive to live up high, I guess it's worth it now.

Felt two more this morning (2-25), fairly decent if they were enough to wake my family and I. Anyone seen the movie "Tremors?" :P

I was in the backyard with my dogs moving sprinklers, talking on the phone with the Chief's wife when she said "Did you feel that, we had an earthquake" I was walking anyways so I missed it. Then I went upstairs in my house and checking my computer when I definitely felt the bigger one. I miss earthquakes after living in California. Today's quakes were nothing much. I was in the mira Loma one and that was an earthquake. I was also in an earthquake in Taiwan on the 10th floor of the Taipei Regency and the building swayed by nearly a foot, furniture fell over and I lay flat on the floor until it was over because you could not stand up. Hope the buildings around here are prepared for an earthquake. People need to inspect their gas and propane fittings. My house is very sturdy, 2X6 construction and it did not really move anything.

We felt it. Very scary. Items fell off wall. Wife wants to move back to Calif. No one told us when we bought here that we would have this many quakes. Baieligh and Dutton who built our house should have disclosed this info to us. Some neighbors are thinking about going further to get the truth. We have worked very hard to get this house and if we have the big one all our hard work will go down the drain. We lived in the Oakland hills right on the fault line our whole life and the only other big quake that I have lived through was the 1985 quake. The Reno ones have been allot stronger than I can ever recall. I do not like them and my wife is scared out of her gore and my 2 year old thinks they are fun, but he is 2 and does not understand. I think it is time to get Earthquake insurance. Who cares what the cost is. It will be worth it in the long run. We are above Sommerset.

I was in for the day visiting my mother near Kietzke & S. Virginia (I live in Fernley) and we were enjoying a movie together when the first one hit. I honestly thought that it was someone running or walking very hard on the roof. They have been remodeling her complex and we really didn't think anything of it. Then the 4.2 hit and that REALLY shook the place up! We didn't have anything hit the floor but, we sure felt it! I'm originally from the midwest & we don't have earthquakes in general there but, after 14 years of living in Reno, I've kind of gotten used to the idea of them happening out here occasionally. We were a little shaken up for a few minutes after that but, turned on KOLO and saw the bottom... needless to say, things were explained he he!

originally from NY so not used to moderate to big ones. The 4.2 one kinda freaked me out for a while. Neither my cat nor my bird reacted oddly.

I was in my livingroom sitting down at my desk on my computer and all the sudden everything glided to the left and back and rite away I grabbed my 2 year old son and shouted to my sister sitting on the recliner "earthquick" and she said "I that it was the upstairs" and all the sudden here comes the after shock and she said " Another one" I thought I moved out of the bay area but we get the same earthquicks here like over there. I just hope Nevada never has to experience the 1989 Mira Loma quick like the bay area because that's nothing nice.

I felt 2 very strong quakes that made pictures fall off the wall and tables, plants fall to the floor, tv's dancing on their stands, building shake and windows rattle......it was like nothing i have ever felt before. I have been in several hurricanes but at least you get a warning. Did anyone;'s animals act strange during and after??..mine were terrified!!!

Posted by: Niki Location: Lemmon Valley on Apr 24, 2008 at 06:44 PM
About 3:50pm today, there was a swaying of our home. My son was in the shower and he said he felt it. About 7 minutes later, we heard a rumble and the swaying was worse than the earlier one. Our 60-pound dog was pacing in the livingroom and looking out the window.

I was sitting on the floor of the kitchen sorting tupperware cabinet when the big ones hit. Now THAT was an amazing way to feel the rummbler; right on my bum, right through the core of my body. It felt like riding a kiddie horse ride. It went on for quite a while. I kind of felt a sight sway too. It was pretty neat. I'm not really scared for myself but it would be aweful for congested areas to suffer severe damage.

FYI, I just felt another quake at 6:00pm in the South meadows area.

We have felt all the earthquakes here, and a few were really scary. As a long-time CA resident, I am familiar with earthquakes but have never experienced such a concentrated swarm in my many years of experience. What's next?

I live on a side of a hill and felt both earthquakes. For two weeks now we have been having earthquakes and lots of aftershocks. Looks like Reno may be in for a big one like the one that occurred in Pleasant Valley in the early 1900's and that one was 7.1.

Posted by: Kathy Location: Cold Springs on Apr 24, 2008 at 04:50 PM
I live in Cold Springs and have felt 2 of the earthquakes. Things shook on shelves but there was no damage. My dogs and cats went a little crazzy too. Thanks Kathy

I was rather alarmed when the first 4.1 hit. Then the aftershocks just kept coming, then the 4.2 happened. I was ready to grab my son and run out of the house!

My teenagers were playing hacky sack on the front lawn, when my youngest heard a loud double crack and the house started to shake. Then we were talking about that when the second one really started the whole house to shaking.

We felt the fisrt 2 quakes out here in the Silver Lake/Red Rock Area. The first one at 3:48 felt like a hard hit and then rolling. The second was the strong one of 4.2. It made the animals take notice and run for cover, & our hanging plant was swinging, but no damage.
