The police officer and a suspect who were wounded in a shootout early Sunday in downtown Reno were continuing to recover at a Reno hospital with Officer Al Del Vecchio speaking and writing, the Police Department said.
Del Vecchio was shot in the face and was conscious and alert in Monday. He's a 16-year law enforcement veteran who has been with the Reno Police Department for two years.
Aldolfo Carreras, 23, was in serious condition with gunshot wounds to his arms, shoulder and head. He was convicted in 2002 for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.
Del Vecchio and Officer Justin Bradley were walking to a nightclub near Second and Sierra streets just before daybreak Sunday to investigate a domestic battery when they encountered Carreras, who was suspected of driving a stolen vehicle.
Del Vecchio tried to pin Carreras' arms, but the man broke free and grabbed a handgun, shooting Del Vecchio. Both officers then opened fire on Cerraras.
It is the first time a Reno police officer has been shot while on duty in more than two years.
