Lost Tax Checks

A truck wreck two weeks ago in the Bay Area could still haunt taxpayers in northern Nevada. A courier truck loaded with tax payments crashed on the San Mateo Bridge on September 11th, dumping an estimated 30,000 tax payments into the San Francisco Bay.
Your check may be lost if you sent in a quarterly tax payment to the San Francisco post office box of the IRS, between September 1st and 11th.
If you fit this criteria, the IRS is asking you to hold off until September 30th to see if your check ends up clearing. If it doesn't clear, you must contact the IRS after to find out the status of your check. The toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040.
Once you get notice that your payment was lost, you'll have 30 days to send a new check. The IRS will wave interest and penalties for affected tax payers.
