Search for Toddler Called Off

NEAR GALENA (KOLO) -- Roughly 30 Washoe County Search and Rescue officials searched for hours for a 4 or 5-year-old girl on Mount Rose.

Sgt. Darrin Rice of Washoe County Search and Rescue says at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday a couple driving on the Mt. Rose Highway reported they saw a young girl running in the woods alone. Rice said when the couple turned around to check on the girl, she was gone.

Rice said searchers began combing a "large" area, along about a four mile stretch of the Mt. Rose Highway. Searchers staged at an NDOT garage near Galena. Authorities utilized back-country hikers, and at least four ATVs. Rice also said searchers were using thermal imaging and night vision goggles.

After about three hours, the search was called off. Authorities located footprints, that may belong to the girl, near tire tracks. Search and Rescue says someone may have picked the girl up. Officers also say there were no missing person reports made to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office or nearby agencies Saturday.

Anyone with information on the girl's identity is urged to contact the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
