Movement to Make Cesar Chavez Day National Holiday

Cesar Chavez would have been 81 years old today. The man known for supporting immigrant farm workers is called a hero among the Latino community.

Singer Carlos Santana says "si se pueda" means "you can create a miracle." And, that's just what it might take to get a national Cesar Chavez Day.

California, and many other states, do set aside today. But, congress has a rule that states no bill declaring a national holiday can be introduced.

And, not everyone agrees it should be a national holiday.

Still, backers of the movement remain hopeful. After all, that's just what Chaves stood for, people coming together to make a difference.

Last year, many students at Sparks High School walked out of class to demonstrate their support of a Chaves Day. This year, school officials say nothing is planned.

Tonight, there will be a celebration of Casar Chavez Day at Circus Circus. Doors open at 5:30. Dinner will be served. For more information, please call 348-8850.
