Three days after finding Tamir Hamilton guilty of first degree murder, a jury has sentenced him to death.

Hamilton is the first man sentenced to die in Washoe County in nearly six years. Holly Quick's family says that's a fitting punishment for a man who ruined their lives.

Quick's family shook with a sudden jolt when the jury announced Tamir Hamilton will pay the ultimate price for first degree murder. Outside the courthouse, Holly's uncle, Mike Glenn told reporters the family is pleased with the jury's decision.

"The facts of a person getting the death penalty and the time frame it takes to kill them is extensive and long," says Glenn. "But the incarceration level of someone on a death sentence is much different than somebody in general population. I would prefer his stay to be under those conditions myself."

The Defense hoped to spare its client, by getting life without the possibility of parole. Attorney Richard Davies says the seven hours of deliberations showed the jury didn't rush its decision.

"We respect their decision," says Davies. "We're not happy with it, but obviously they spent a lot of time on it and we're happy about that. I know it was difficult for them as well, it's not easy for anybody."

Prosecuting attorney Luke Prengaman says the death penalty is warranted when the jury decides that a crime was committed beyond a reasonable doubt and the severity outweighs the case presented by the defense. He says the information presented in this case was enough to put Hamilton on death row.

"It's always difficult for a jury to consider sentencing a man to death," says Prengaman. "But the facts in this case absolutely warranted the sentence they handed out today."

Hamilton is the 84th person currently on death row, here in Nevada. He'll now be sent to Nevada State Prison and will eventually return to Washoe County in May for sentencing on a second count for sexual assault with a deadly weapon.

The Supreme Court currently has a stay on all executions because it's reviewing whether lethal injection constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.
