The city reached 101 degrees Tuesday making it the eighth straight day with temperatures of 100 degrees or higher.
Neighboring cities are expected to have 100-plus temperatures until Thursday, the weather service said. Fernley is expected Tuesday to hit 102, which is a degree higher than Monday’s temperature and one degree below the 1960 record. Carson City is expected to hit 99 degrees. And temperatures in Truckee are expected to hit 92 degrees.
Sierra Pacific Power Co. said that for the fourth time in seven days a record for electricity use was recorded. As of 4 p.m. Monday, the peak usage was 1,744 megawatts. That broke the record of 1,716 set Thursday, according to the company. The power company serves about 345,000 customers in Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe.
Extremely high temperatures are expected for the rest of the week. Possible thunderstorms in Reno might help cool off the area by Thursday.
