The city of Sparks is considering a proposal that would move the community's ball parks, to make way for new retail development at the Sparks Marina. A company out of Kansas City, Red Development, wants to build a 96-acre retail and entertainment center called "Legends at Sparks Marina."
The developer and the city manager would not give specific details, but say the center will include national retailers and "themed attractions," like the type you see in LasVegas retail developments. Red Development is also in negotiations to lure a professional minor league baseball team to Sparks, and if that happens, they'll also build a large-scale stadium.
To make room for all of this, the existing Don Mello Sports Complex would have to shut down. City officials say it will be replaced by a "bigger and better" sport complex on Vista Boulevard, south of fire station five. If the city approves the proposal, the new complex will have two baseball fields, and six for softball, that's two more than the Don Mello complex currently has.
