A transformer blew near a Las Vegas Strip intersection Tuesday evening, causing outages at four casino resorts. That left dozens of people stuck in elevators for more than an hour.
The transformer blew shortly before 8 p.m., leaving the hotel towers at Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur and Four Seasons Hotel in the dark. The Clark County Fire Department says power was restored about 1½ hour later.
Firefighters and hotel engineers worked to rescue people trapped in elevators. Meanwhile, the casinos continued operating on backup generators.
It wasn't immediately clear what caused the transformer failure. An after-hours call to a Nevada Power Company spokeswoman was not immediately returned.
