Our community cannot survive by building houses, retail stores and warehouses that are solely for the purpose of serving the local population, unless that population is put to work producing goods and services needed in the regional or global economy. We need to have an economic reason for growth, other than just to have new citizens to share our tax burden and to help build additional houses. People will not migrate here to live without a good reason. Creating construction jobs to provide the housing for the construction workers is not a sustainable process. A better reason is needed for growth. Unless the new homes are primarily intended for retirees or vacation use, they need to be accompanied and usually preceded by the creation of non construction productive jobs. Where are these new abundant manufacturing, mining, intellectual, research and entertainment jobs? To grow without adequate local resources and without jobs to support that growth is a foolish gamble.
