The Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center says between 75 acres and 100 acres of grass and brush has burned so far.
No buildings are threatened at this time. But fire officials warn that some structures could be threatened if the wind shifts.
Winds in the area about 15 miles southeast of Reno currently are out of the southwest at 30 miles per hour. Gusts up to 80 miles per hour have been recorded on the mountain tops near Mount Rose this afternoon.
Fire officials say they are making good progress on the south and east flanks of the fire. Two airtankers, a helicopter and at least 15 fire engines are helping douse the flames.
