President bush set out to answer the question -- is the sacrifice in iraq
worth it? he tied his answer to 9-11.
"The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of
september 11..if we abandon the iraqi people to men like Zarqawi...and if we yield the future of the middle east to men like bin Laden."
He acknowledged images of violence and bloodshed in Iraq have taken a toll on public support for the war. He warned the enemy won't give up easily.
"We have more work to do and there will be tough moments that test America's resolve. we are fighting against men with blind hatred - and armed with lethal weapons - who are capable of any atrocity.
The troops who provided the backdrop for the President's speech know this all too well. Fort Bragg's 82nd airborne division has made a large sacrifice. 97-hundred of their fellow soldiers are deployed in iraq, 89 died there.
As expected, the president gave no timetable for withdrawal of U.S. forces and did not announce a change in strategy. democrats say without specific benchmarks and deadlines, there's no way to determine when troops can come home.
