The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitor's Authority (RSCVA) and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RTIA) are welcoming the start of the 2005 Volleyball Festival with a volleyball skills demonstration by a Nevada team that's one of the top teams on the west coast. The event will include a volleyball court set up in the middle of the airport Baggage Claim, complete with bumping, spiking, setting, and music. The Volleyball Festival, which begins on June 24 and culminates with a nationally televised finals match on July 1, is the largest annual women's team sporting event, slightly smaller in number of participants than the Summer Olympics. It is projected to bring more than 20,000 people to the Reno-Tahoe area over the week long event.
As one of the area's largest events, with an estimated impact of $28 million, the Volleyball Festival brings together the top young volleyball players nationally and internationally. The festival produces more than 7,000 volleyball matches over a six-day period and starts with an Olympic-style opening ceremony at Mackay Stadium at the University of Nevada, Reno. Thirty-four hotels and casinos will host the athletes, families, and spectators in 40,500 rooms.
