Lieutenant Leigha Struffert received her new commander badge today during a special reception at the police department. In her new position, Struffert will be in charge of Reno patrol operations and other police activities for the area north of Interstate 80.
Struffert was the seventh woman to work for RPD back in 1989 when she was hired as a patrol officer. Today, women make up about 10% of the sworn officers in the reno police department.
"I am very excited," Struffert says. "I have very enthusiasticaly accepted the commander position. And I think this is a very big step for the Reno police department."
"Women have a background in a lot of ways that suites them well to do what we do," says Chief Micheal Poehlman. "I certainly hope a lot of women apply for law enforcement because they can be very successful."
