RENO, Nev. (AP) - Beachgoers this year won't be allowed to park along Highway 28 and walk into Sand Harbor State Park on Lake Tahoe's east shore.
Beginning June 16, parking along the road and dropping off people at the park will be prohibited.
Instead, overflow parking will be available at a nearby elementary school and a shuttle service will pick people up every 20 minutes between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. A $3 per person fee supports the transit service and there will be no additional cost to enter the park.
Officials say the move is for safety reasons.
In the summer, Sand Harbor parking lots are typically full by midmorning. In years past, latecomers have parked along the narrow,
windy highway and walked to the beach.
