Reno police are warning residents about fraudulent telephone solicitations that claim to be seeking donations to help widows of fallen police officers.
Police Sgt. Jeff Freelove said the department's financial crimes unit has received several complaints about the calls. He says the organization is unknown to Reno police.
Freelove said it is impossible to verify the legitmacy of a so-called charity over the telephone. He recommends that if you are not personally familiar with the group asking for a donation, don't give them any money.
Another option is to ask for the solicitor's full name, group name, telephone number and address. He says that way you can research the group on the Internet or through the Better Business Bureau before writing them a check.
