The popular Reno Santa Pub Crawl returns to downtown this weekend. It typically draws a crowd of around 10,000 but this year up to 15,000 Santa impersonators are expected. A spokesman for the event, Ed Adkins says the number may sound high but it was once typical traffic for the Biggest Little City.
With 40 percent of participants coming in from out of town, the event boosts the economy in addition to being a good time. Organizer Matthew Goedert says the real Christmas joy comes from cup sales, because that money will be used to buy playground equipment for Washoe County Schools. The souvenir cup is only $5 and it will get you discounts and specials at 56 bars on the night of the crawl.
Following a few rules will be key to keeping everyone safe during the event. Top among them: you must at least 21 and carry your ID at all times. Organizers also want to remind you that open containers are not allowed on city streets, so be sure to finish your drink before heading to a the next location. Also, no marshmallow fights. A mock snowball fight with marshmallows left the streets a mess last year. You'll find a complete list of rules on the Crawl's website.
The website also has a map of participating venues, and a list of related Santa themed events taking place this weekend. The first is Friday at the National Bowling Stadium. Just $15 dollars gets you 2 games and shoe rentals. If you bring a new unused toy for Toys for Tots, you'll get an additional $10 off. Take another dollar off for dressing in your best Santa or Elf hat. That's 2 games and shoe rental for just $4.
Haven't got your costume yet? Ed Adkins says there's a bunch of awesome shops downtown and midtown. Junkee Clothing Exchange, Chocolate Walrus and the Melting Pot have great costume options and souvenir cups for sale. If you're in Sparks, stop by Prism Magic to find what you need.
