Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement after news that the Energy Department expects to miss its deadline to file a license application for the proposed nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain.

For months the DOE has said the dump would be dead if it didn't file its license application by this summer.

Monday the agency announced it probably won't meet its own deadline because of budget cuts Reid engineered in the Senate.

"This is excellent news for Nevada and the nation". said Reid.

"Nevada should not be the nation's nuclear dumping ground nor should millions of Americans be put at risk to ship tons of nuclear waste here".

"While I know the DOE will continue to try to limp forward, it is clear they are wasting their time and valuable taxpayer dollars hoping to build a dump that will never see the light of day."

It continues to be perplexing that the Majority Leader of the Senate continues to trumpet how "proud" he is to impede the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository which the Congress and the president approved over 5 years ago. It must be that the other members of the Senate have resigned themselves to "put up with" Sen. Reid's actions. Neither Obama or Clinton will appear in a revised edition of "Profiles in Courage" for their bowing and scraping vows (spoken in Nevada, anyhow) to "kill" Yucca with no responsible alternate solution. Oh, I forgot, Hilary wants to form a committee to study the problem.

Oh Harry, Good for the nation??? Let's not forget those 150 million Americans living withing 75 miles of a nuclear plant...plants which increasingly have to rely on ABOVE GROUND storage of spent fuel. Yes, it sure sounds safer than burying it 1000 feet underground in the middle of BFE.
