Full Day Kindergarten Proposal

Here in Washoe County, about a quarter of all public school kindergarten students are enrolled in the district's seventeen full-day programs.

The coordinator for the District says the student benefits are easy to recognize: less transition time between home, school and daycare and a more consistent learning environment.

However, critics of the proposal say school districts need to work on improving the existing programs with more accountability--before entering a new system.

Another concern is that young child tire after a full day in class...an argument teachers say isn't a factor.

The program is expected to cost the state seventy-two million dollars from the general fund for the next two years.

If passed, it would take effect in all seventeen school districts in the 2006-2007 school year.
