Las Vegas Mayor Calls For Overhaul Of Nevada Tax System

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman used his annual State of the City address to call for overhauling Nevada's tax system.

The mayor, a Democrat, says he wants an open dialogue with Gov. Jim Gibbons over cutting the state budget.

He also wants a bipartisan panel to present ideas to the City Council.

Most of Goodman's speech -- held at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve -- focused on recognizing city projects that meet high environmental standards.

The mayor says he expects criticism on his call for tax reform -- since tax policy is supposed to handled on the state level by the governor and Legislature.

But Goodman says it's important to raise the issue.
