Nev. Gaming Agent Kills Suspected Kidnapper

An off-duty agent with the Nevada Gaming Control board shot and killed a man suspected in a kidnapping and carjacking, police said.

Ron Holladay, a commander with the Reno Police Department, said the agent witnessed what appeared to be a kidnapping in progress and followed the suspect Monday morning.

A confrontation followed, and the agent shot the man, identified as Santiago Martinez of Reno, according to investigators.

Martinez was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time after the 9:15 a.m. shooting.

Holladay said two women initially were in the vehicle with Martinez, and one fled.

He added that Martinez was armed with a knife, which was found in the back seat of the car.

The name of the agent was not immediately released.

Holladay said the investigation is being handled jointly by the Reno and Sparks police departments, along with the Washoe County sheriff's office.
