RENO - The United States Postal Service may close the Reno Mail Processing and Distribution Plant and move its operations to West Sacramento. 292 people work at the plant. They were told last night.
The plant is located right behind the main post office on Vassar Street. If the plant closes, it will not impact the main post office or delivery. However, the Postal Service tells KOLO 8 News Now mail would be slower. Right now, the service standard for USPS is one to three days coast to coast. If the plant in Reno closes, it would make it two to four days.
With more and more people paying their bills online and over-the-phone, the Postal Service has been delivering less mail, and is currently operating in the red. The Postal Service says closing the processing and distribution plant here in Reno is the only thing it can do without Congressional approval.
The Postal Service has asked Congress to shorten mail delivery from six days a week to five. It is also wants to stop paying for health care for retirees, 75 years in advance. A spokesman for the Postal Service tells us, every year USPS writes a check for $5.5 billion to the Treasury for employees that haven't even been born yet. Congress has yet to take action.
The study on whether to close the plant will be complete mid-2012. USPS says it will be holding public meetings between now and then.

I see first hand the fraud, waist, and abuse at our plant. It's not those individual who "actually" process the mail. It's those so called supervisors who DO NOT do anything and are making $80k annually. The are too many of them. In one section, 4 supervisors to 12 employees! A Congressional investigation is needed to resolve the "Good ol' Boy" mentality and help those how actually do the work!
If USPS really wanted to save money and become more efficient they would move all west coast processing to a big plant out at the Rene Tahoe Industrial Park like Walmart and other big players did.
As a current Postal employee, I can tell you that his plans for shutting down plants and putting 220k people out on the streets looking for work, when half the people have only ever held a postal job, is cause for disaster. This PMG is truly looking to line his pockets. He agrees on a union contract, then 4 months later runs to congress to dissolve that contract. Why? because he thought Congress would bow down to him and do whatever he asked of them. Well, All I can say is, good luck with the 2-4 day service if he shuts down 308 of the 508 porcessing and distribution plants down. You know what that means? Your mail will have to be driven to another city or state in some cases, to be processed. That city will obviously do their own city mail first, meaning your mail gets set back at least another day. Then they finally run that mail, send it to your city, taking another day or two because he also wants to get rid of flying mail. Soooo everything will be trucked. PMG needs to get his head out of his *** and look at the people doing the work. There are situations where there are 5 supervisors to 25 people. GET RID OF UPPER MANAGEMENT. They are making the higher salaries and doing none of the work. Dont put blue collar Americans in the unemployment line as if our unemployment rate isnt high enough.
