Elko Judge Modifies Sentence In Abuse Case

An Elko judge sentenced a woman to 10 days in jail on gross misdemeanor charges related to child abuse, then modified the sentence to allow her to do 80 hours community service after talking to lawyers in his chambers.

Tracie Lynn Parker, 47, entered an Alford plea to two counts of neglect of duty. The charges involve the alleged abuse of her 9-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter in 2006.

Defense lawyer Scott Freeman said Parker maintained her innocence and passed a lie detector test.

He said she entered the plea - where she doesn't admit guilt but acknowledges prosecutors have enough evidence to convict her - to spare her children from a trial.
