Neighborhood children will gather in Pat Baker Park Saturday afternoon for a Christmas tree decorating and gift exchange event sponsored by the Reno Police Department and the Reno Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
Hot cocoa and cookies will be served during the event, scheduled from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., and there will be face painting activities for the children who will decorate a 7-foot blue spruce tree with ornaments they have been making for the event.
A visit from Santa Claus is also scheduled for a children's gift exchange with gifts provided through an anonymous community supporter.
The Northtowne WalMart has also partnered with the Reno Police Department to provide support for the event.
The tree lighting will take place at dark.
The containerized blue spruce is scheduled for planting at a later date by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department which is providing the tree.
The event is one of several neighborhood events in the Oliver-Montello area that are being held to improve neighborhood safety and quality of life as part of an overall approach by the Reno Police Department and other Reno City departments to improve conditions and issues in the neighborhood.
That approach includes targeted crime fighting and community-based policing, use of closed circuit television, and other elements.
