Time is running out for Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs, which must raise $50,000 by the end of the year to retain a matching grant to replace the roof at the historic Thunderbird Lodge at Lake Tahoe.
The Thunderbird Lodge was the home of multimillionaire George Whittell Jr. until 1969. In the 1930s, Whittell purchased most of the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.
The Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society manages the facility, offering tours of the mansion at Lake Tahoe.
The state provided $175,000 to re-roof the complex, and the lodge has secured additional donations of $125,000.
But $50,000 of that will be withdrawn if a similar amount is not matched before Dec. 31.
