Conservation Group Rates Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts

RENO, Nevada (AP) - A coalition of conservation group gives Squaw Valley high marks for efforts to protect the environment.

Other Tahoe-area ski resorts didn't fair as well in the annual report card issued by the Ski Area Citizen's Coalition.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort received a failing grade for the second straight year.

But Kirkwood officials and other critics say the report is unfair because it punishes resorts for measures taken to try to remain competitive and ignores other efforts taken to improve the environment.

The coalition ranks resorts on a numerical basis. Points can be lost for resorts that expand ski runs, or build new lifts, snowmaking systems or condominiums. Points can be added for resorts that recycle, support renewable energy and expand mass transit.
