Local charitable agencies are getting ready for the holidays and as always they are scrambling to keep up with the need.
The essential question is, are donations keeping pace with the need? There's always that challenge, but this year there may be some new wrinkles.
The pace has been picking up the past few days at Evelyn Mount's home in northeast Reno. Her garage is starting to resemble the pantry that will provide holiday meals for more than 4,000 people.
Evelyn has been doing this work for more than 25 years. She's the commanding general of an effort she calls Community Outreach, but she doesn't do it alone. Each year friends and volunteers show up to help stock the larder and a steady stream of area residents show up with turkeys and boxes of food. That's how it happens here and elsewhere.
A short distance away at the Reno Sparks Gospel Mission's offices Thursday morning, a tow truck and crew arrived. Their load was different, 30 turkeys donated by the employees of Triple A.
These annual drives are truly a community effort Companies and individuals helping others over the holiday season. Each agency has its own goal.
Miller's agency has some new hurdles this year. Corporate decisions made elsewhere have banned their bell-ringers from some key locations like the local Target store and blocked their toy drive from others. They need other stores to step in and invite them. The needs don't stop there.
They need volunteers to man those kettles and toys. They've lost some key toy locations as well. There are a lot of needs and a lot of ways to help.
KOLO-TV is teaming again with Evelyn Mount for this year's Community Outreach Food Drive.
Friday, we'll be collecting food at four locations.
You can make a donation at Evelyn Mount's home on Cannan Street and the Gold Dust West Casino on Fourth Street.
Sak 'n Save is also taking donations at its two grocery stores on Oddie Boulevard and Plumb Lane.
While you are doing your Thanksgiving shopping pick up a little something extra for those in need. Hope to see you there.
