As the price tag of a college education continues to increase, 20 northern Nevada students received some extra help from the Wells Fargo First Generation Scholarship fund.
A $50,000 check was be presented to University of Nevada officials during a luncheon with the scholarship winners in November.
In partnership with University of Nevada, Wells Fargo started the First Generation Scholarship fund in 1999 to support students who are the first in their families to attend college.
Since its inception, the fund has helped more than 400 students from a variety of backgrounds with more than $725,000 in scholarships.
This year’s recipients reflect a cross section of the many disciplines at the university including education, engineering, nutrition, political science, biochemistry, social work, international business and criminal justice.
To earn a Wells Fargo First Generation Scholarship, students must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and participation in school and community activities.
Scholarship winners also commit to spending 10 hours a month volunteering in the community.
