Boreal Mountain Resort has retained its bragging rights for another year by opening one run today, thanks to a weekend snowstorm and cold temperatures that allowed snowmaking.
Five inches of snow fell over the weekend and temperatures below
freezing were beneficial for snowmaking.
The resort atop Donner Summit on Interstate 80 is running one chairlift on an intermediate trail a moving carpet for beginners and four jib features for riders and cautions that operations are on a day-to-day basis.
Boreal is the first Northern California resort to open.
Mammoth Mountain, nearly 200 miles to the south, opened on Thursday.
Sierra resorts traditionally aim for Thanksgiving weekend openings.
Boreal just made it a year ago, opening on November 25th -- the day after Thanksgiving.
