Environmentalists and animal lovers will be back on the beaches today in a race to try to save marine life covered with oil from that container ship that collided with a Bay Bridge support tower.
Experts say the heavy-duty bunker fuel oil that leaked from the Cosco Busan is a "dirty" type of oil that is hard to clean up, because it breaks down slowly. It's feared the oil could affect marine life for years.
Meanwhile, local officials are questioning the Coast Guard's response to the accident. San Francisco officials say the Coast Guard initially underreported the size of the spill and that prevented the city from taking appropriate action.
But a Coast Guard official rejected any suggestion that crews could have contained the spill more quickly, saying that the Coast Guard and private response firms responded immediately after the incident.
