Business owners in the Silver State are hoping to get some green this holiday season, with their products that are all “Made in Nevada.” Not only merchandise like art and t-shirts and clothing, but sauces, jellies, coffee and wines. These business owners will tell you, unlike big box stores, the dollars you spend here will stay here.
"I do customer jewelry, gourds, basketry, a variety of things,” Rima Kent-Steiber of Rising Star Art said. “I work in watercolor, oils, scratchboard and paint."
"I'm a small business owner and make reusable bags," Leon Werner of Bag Ladeez said.
The one thing these bags, baskets and barbecue sauce have in common, they are all made in Nevada. A banner flagged the attention of shoppers to the “Flag Store Sign and Banner” in Sparks, where these local products sparked their attention.
"This is community-minded people,” Marty Smith of Flag Store Sign and Banner said. “They’re selling their stuff right here, made in Nevada, and they are your neighbors."
This makes customer service so much more special.
"It gives many artists and other local producers great exposure,” Kent-Steiber said. “It's much easier for you to come here or buy something from local, rather than going on a catalog or online. It's more personal."
Opening any small business is a personal matter, especially for Leon Werner.
"We've been in business for 3 years now,” Werner said. “I was 68 years old when we started it. I never touched a sewing machine in my life and I'm having a blast. We make sure we use everything. We don't waste anything so we make bottle bags out of material that is leftover."
And Werner, like other vendors, hope things continue to look up.
"Bottom line is that when you buy local, the money stays here,” Smith said. “70-80% of it comes right back to the community."
All of these businesses are a part of “Made in Nevada,” a non-profit marketing cooperative. You can find more information about them on their website, www.madeinnevada.org.
