The search for a missing 9-year-old boy has been called off in Carson City after a tragic discovery. Saturday morning the remains of a child were found in a burned shed on Schulz Drive. Authorities say the remains match the description of Patrick Ryea, a 9-year-old who went missing Friday.
Searchers looked for the boy all night, and a helicopter was sent from the Fallon Naval Air station. Ryea was last seen around 5 p.m. Friday. The shed fire broke out around the same time as two other fires in the area of Schulz around 7 p.m. that evening. The fires were extinguished and the search for Ryea continued into the night. The Carson City Sheriff's Office says the light of day on Saturday revealed the remains of a body inside the burned shed. Positive identification had not been made at deadline.
Ryea's family lives on the same street as the shed that burned, and the child was described as upset at the time of his disappearance.
Law enforcement says because there were several fires in the same area at once, arson was suspected early on. Authorities are reported to be investigating whether the boy set the fires, and then became trapped.
