Washoe DA Testifies He Wouldn't Use Former Detective As Witness

Washoe County District Attorney Richard Gammick has testified in his own behalf in a federal court case brought by a former sheriff's detective.

Gammick testified that he wouldn't use Rene Botello as a witness in child-abuse cases because he had made false accusations against
his staff.

Botello had challenged the testimony of a nurse in the Child Abuse Response and Evaluations program and wanted the unit audited.

Gammick denied the audit request.

Botello says the D-A later prevented him from getting another job.

The civil lawsuit claims Gammick, Assistant District Attorney John Helzer and the county violated Botello's right to free speech.
