YMCA Of The Sierra: "Best Youth Sports Program"

YMCA of the Sierra earned a reader’s choice award this week or “Best Youth Sports Program” in the Reno News & Review’s “Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada” issue.

The local alternative newspaper is known for the annual issue which its editor calls “the biggest, best and most accurate ‘Best of’ in Northern Nevada.”

More than 1,000 people turned in valid ballots, helping the non-profit organization earn the coveted distinction. And the nomination comes as YMCA of the Sierra prepares to open its remodeled Wellness Center at the Sparks Family Center on Baring Boulevard on Dec. 1.

The Sparks Family Center previously had only a small, 1,800-square-foot wellness area, which has now been completely renovated into a 3,500-square-foot, full-service Wellness Center with state-of-the-art LifeFitness equipment and a MobileFit intelligent wellness training system.

A community reception to celebrate the opening will be held Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents are invited to commemorate the event with YMCA staff and members and try out the new Wellness Center equipment.

Youth sports programs offered at YMCA of the Sierra Family Centers include group wellness classes such as international dance, after-school recreation including basketball and other sports and YMCA Activate America® programs designed to combat rising levels of obesity and promote healthy living.

YMCA of the Sierra was one of the first YMCA organizations in the nation to adopt and implement the innovative Activate America® program.

“It’s really exciting to be named in the News & Review’s ‘Best Of’ issue,” said Mark Lieske, president and CEO of YMCA of the Sierra.

“It’s a real compliment to us and our programs. We hope that we continue to remain top-of-mind when parents think about where to take their kids before and after school and in their free time. We work to keep kids happy and healthy at the YMCA and family-centered health and wellness is part of that work.”
