A Northern California man was killed after his dune buggy crashed at a huge sand dune about 25 miles east of Fallon.
Steve Molder, 50, of Pittsburg, died after the accident Friday afternoon at the Sand Mountain Recreation Area, Churchill County Sheriff Rich Ingram said.
The accident occurred on the back side of Sand Mountain, but no details were immediately available, Ingram said.
A 29-year-old male passenger, whose name was not available, was injured and taken to a Reno hospital.
Earlier, Molder had been in the dune buggy with his 24-year-old daughter.
The 1:30 p.m. accident is under investigation.
Sand Mountain, located along U.S. Highway 50 on land managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, draws thousands of off-road vehicle enthusiasts annually.
It is two miles long and up to 600 feet high.
