Nevada Controller Kathy Augustine has been fined 15-thousand dollars for making staffers do her campaign work on state time -- and becomes the first statewide elective official to face impeachment proceedings.
After the state Ethics Commission issued its decision, Augustine
apologized for her conduct - but said she won't resign in advance
of an impeachment procedure that would be conducted by the state
Legislature. She and her two lawyers declined to make any further
comment.
The commission voted three-to-two to fine Augustine and forward her case to the Legislature. The two "no" votes were cast by
panel members who wanted a stiffer fine or a full hearing rather
than Wednesday's abbreviated session.
Augustine also was accused by a former employee of sexual
harassment, but that's a separate matter now pending in a federal
court.
