2001 Sex Abuse Allegation Against Vegas Fugitive Gets New Look

An allegation that fugitive Chester Arthur Stiles sexually assaulted a young girl in 2001 is getting a new look from Las Vegas police, while a search for Stiles continued, authorities said Friday.

Stiles, 37, has been the focus of a nationwide manhunt since police identified him as the man who raped and sexually assaulted a girl in a homemade videotape that surfaced last month in the rural Nevada town of Pahrump.

The girl, who authorities say was about 3 years old at the time of the attack, was found last week with her mother in Las Vegas.

Now 7, the child has been described as happy and healthy, with no
memory of the 2003 encounter with Stiles.

A Las Vegas police spokesman said Friday it was unclear if a police report was taken after the 2001 sex abuse allegation.

He said authorities were continuing to seek the public's help in finding Stiles, who is wanted on state and federal warrants in a case alleging he groped a 6-year-old girl in 2003.

The spokesman, Officer Bill Cassell, corrected earlier accounts and said the Las Vegas warrant charging Stiles with lewdness with a child under 14 was issued in April 2004. Police earlier had said the warrant was issued last year.

"We're also seeking Mr. Stiles in the latest allegation in the case in Pahrump," Cassell said, but no warrant had been issued in that case.

Police say they have received hundreds of tips about Stiles, who they called dangerous and possibly armed based on earlier arrests.

Stiles had previously been arrested on charges including assault, battery, resisting a police officer, auto theft, leaving the scene of an accident and contempt of court, authorities said.

He was convicted in 1999 in Las Vegas of carrying a concealed weapon, and in 2001 of conspiracy to commit grand larceny.

He pleaded no contest in Houston in 1993 to unlawful carrying of a

Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett said others have characterized Stiles as a "survivalist type" who claimed to have weapons, a Navy SEAL background and who always carried a knife.

The man who turned the tape in, Darrin Tuck, 26, remained held Friday in the Nye County jail after his arrest last weekend on a probation violation charge.

Beckett has said he will likely face pornography charges.
