If you are over the limit, you could be under arrest. That’s what area law enforcement agencies want to remind drivers over the Labor Day weekend.

During a DUI checkpoint on Sunday, 1,800 cars drove through. Of that, more than 30 drivers were screened and five were arrested. With more special events and holidays around the corner, they say you can expect to see more of these patrols.

"Drinking and driving is against the law," NHP Trooper Chuck Allen said. “It doesn’t matter what day of the year it is.”

And the Labor Day weekend, the Rib Cook Off or Burning Man are no exceptions. That is why the Nevada Highway Patrol, Reno and Sparks Police Departments and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office joined forces and labored through the Labor Day weekend.

“They are just meeting people,” Trooper Allen explained, “Spending about 10-15 seconds speaking to them. If any odor of alcohol or any substance like marijuana is detected, that vehicle is directed into our secondary screening area.”

According to the Office of Traffic Safety, 166 people have died on Nevada roads this year. That is ten more than this time last year. They say more of these patrols well continue well into the holiday season.

“Every holiday you can expect to see additional law enforcement officers,” Trooper Allen said. “Whether it’s Memorial Day, Labor Day, the holidays around Christmas, Thanksgiving and so forth.”
