Closing: Local Wood Furniture Business
Reno
Look at the continuing high unemployment rates and it’s easy to understand why so many local businesses are closing their doors. Sadly a popular furniture store in Carson City is the latest victim. The Carson Oak Outlet will shut its doors in December.

A new confidence for consumers bring change for businesses.

Ask any repeat customer to Carson Oak Outlet why he keeps coming back, this is most likely the answer they will give.

Owner Mike Lavin by his own admission is a "people person" first. He'd have to be, he started the business 22-years ago.

"It's a lot of fun and you know when you have furniture like this people when they put it in their homes and they talk to you about it later, you get a lot of self gratification out of that," says Lavin.

And in these economic times, that has in some ways made it difficult for Mike to make ends meet these days. Wood furniture, in this case, Oak furniture lasts a long time and not readily replaced.

Combine that with the fact that a housing boom is bust and people are holding tight on to their money, Mike says he decided to make an early exit and head into retirement.

"It unfortunate for the citizens in this area because there are not many stores like this in the area and it was always a good place to come and shop we will really miss it," says Chris Apple a Minden resident.

Customers will see discounts from 25% to 60%. Lavin says he has about $500,000 dollars worth of inventory.

"You basically have 90 days so you do that in 90 days and you kind of turn the keys over and walk away," says Lavin.

Ask Mike if after more than 20-years in the businesses if there are any words of wisdom he had about the business. Yes he said, furniture is heavy.
