SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) - A regulatory agency has approved
a $5,000 fine for a Los Angeles man accused of failing to comply
with boating regulations designed to stop nonnative shellfish from
infiltrating Lake Tahoe.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's legal committee took the
action Wednesday against 29-year-old Mark Kanev.
TRPA officials say Kanev tried to launch his vessel on June 28
on the lake's east shore, but was turned away by inspectors after
they learned it had been in a quagga- mussel-infested reservoir in
Utah.
Kanev was accused of later illegally launching the boat by
taking it to a west shore inspection station and giving different
information about the boat's origin.
TRPA's legal committee directed staff to work with Kanev on a
public apology acknowledging the gravity of the infraction.
