Senator Reid and Republican challenger Sharron Angle continue to slug it out in televisiion ads that draw stark contrasts between their political philosophies.

The latest from the Reid campaign compares his efforts for education, specifically school jobs, with hers.

We take a closer look in our latest Adwatch report.

First, the transcript of the ad in its entireity with attribution for its claims.:

"1400 teachers and school workers facing September layoffs"
Associated Press 8/13

"Then Harry Reid got emergency aid to keep them teaching."
RGJ 8/11

"but Sharron Angle would have voted no."
Fox Business News 8/9

Angle: 'I think the emergency is in Harry Reid's mind.'
Fox Business News 8/9

"It's the same Sharron Angle who would eliminate the Department of Education."

KNPR Host 5/19: 'Eliminate the Department of Education or simply cut it back?
Angle: "I'd like to go through to the elimination.'

"Teacher layoffs, No Department of Education. Sharron Angle. She just too extreme."

Let's rewind and take a closer look, point by point.

"1400 teachers and school workers facing September layoffs"
Associated Press 8/13

"Then Harry Reid got emergency aid to keep them teaching."

TRUE*

This is true....with an explanation. School districts throughout the state have already had to cut their budgets and that includes layoffs. Some of those laid off employees, teachers and other school based employees may now be called back thanks to $83 million dollars in education funding included in a federal jobs bill passed earlier this month. The money should be here in Nevada in the next week or so, in time to be put to use this school year. Washoe County's share will be about $12 million, much of it we're told much of it will be used to put more teachers back into the early grades.
The statewide number of 14-hundred comes from the Department of Education as an estimate of the number of jobs the bill would save here. Nevada school officials say it is accurate.

"but Sharron Angle would have voted no."
Fox Business News 8/9

Angle: 'I think the only emergency is in Harry Reid's mind.'
Fox Business News 8/9

TRUE

The quote comes from an interview on the Fox business channel. Angle was arguing the bill was a political payoff to the teachers' union, Senator Reid's emergency rather than Nevada schools'. In another interview with right wing radio host Roger Hedgecock, Angle called it a giveaway to special interests...meaning the teacher's union, adding with the state losing population those teachers' jobs were no longer there.

"It's the same Sharron Angle who would eliminate the Department of Education."

KNPR Host 5/19: 'Eliminate the Department of Education or simply cut it back?
Angle: "I'd like to go through to the elimination.'

TRUE*

Again, true with an explanation. The quote comes from a radio interview in May, but Angle said as much on other occasions in the run up to the primary election as did her own website. Today, the candidate and website frame the issue differently, saying Angle, a former teacher herself, believes education decisions and funding should be kept to the states and local communities as much as possible, avoiding any specific statement concerning elimination of the department.

"Teacher layoffs, No Department of Education. Sharron Angle. She just too extreme."

As always that's your call.
