RENO, Nev. (AP) - State wildlife officials have launched a new program aimed at attracting more youngsters to hunting.

The new apprentice hunting license was approved by the Nevada legislature last year.

The license is available for one season to anyone 12 and older who has not previously held a hunting license. It's good for upland game and waterfowl and doesn't require the usual completion of a hunter education course.

The apprentice must be accompanied at all times by an adult mentor 18 or older with a valid Nevada hunting license and mentor affidavit.

The license is free but a $3 habitat conservation fee is required along with any necessary waterfowl or game stamps. Tagged species are off limits.

They should not charge a 12 year old for anything, that should be their time to decide if they want to and like hunting. That $3.00 habitat fee is just another way to dig a little deeper into hunters pockets. How many of these youngsters are going to pay the fee and maybe go out 1 time that year or not get to go at all. These states crying that there are fewer and fewer young hunters each year are a lot of that problem to start with. All of us hunters and even shooters know that anymore it is very expensive to own and shoot any firearms. Get rid of the obstacles and let them have a year totally free with the exceptions of special tags and stamps, encourage them enjoy the experience.
