NHP Investigating After Girl on Bike Hit by Pickup

The Nevada Highway Patrol is looking into an accident involving an eight-year-old girl who was hit by a pickup Thursday night. The truck’s driver is a 16-year-old son of a Washoe County sheriff’s Deputy.

The accident happened about 7:30 pm at the intersection of Talking Sparrow Drive and West Calle De La Plata in Spanish Springs. NHP says the girl darted in front of the teen's Ford Ranger pickup truck. The driver slammed on his brakes, but his truck hit the girl, throwing her from her bike and into the roadway.

The girl was taken to Renown Medical Center, where she has improved and is in fair condition.

Because a sheriff’s deputy's son is involved, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers are taking over the investigation.

Troopers don’t think speed was a factor in this crash.

Because the driver and the girl are both under the age of 18, NHP isn’t releasing their names.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is urged to contact Trooper Mike Stapledon at (775) 689-4623 or the Department of Public Safety (DPS)-Communications Center at (775) 687-0400 regarding case # NHP-1008191900.
