33rd Nevada Soldier Dies In Iraq

The 33rd person from Nevada has died in the war in Iraq.

The military says 29-year-old Army Staff Sgt. Michael L. Townes died in Balad, Iraq, on Sept. 16 from a non-combat related illness.

Townes was from Las Vegas.

He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment out of Fort Hood, Texas.

In a statement, Gov. Jim Gibbons and his wife Dawn extended their sympathies to the families of Townes and Army Specialist Travis Virgadamo of Pahrump, who died Aug. 30 in Taji, Iraq.

Gibbons says flags at the Capitol in Carson City will be flown at half-staff on Friday in honor of the two men.
