Just when you thought fast food couldn't get any more convenient, the food truck trend is taking off. And these mobile vendors are getting even easier to track down.
"We've been running the mobile catering truck for about three months now," said Mike Kavner, the general manager of Cheeseburger Island Style in Reno. "It's a whole kitchen inside. So everything is fresh as can be."
The crowds kept coming up to the restaurant's food truck, which parked on the corner of Rock Boulevard and Energy Way in Reno at lunchtime.
"Why not? It's very convenient," said Nakia Pullen, who works in the office building next door.
This year, there are 34 mobile food trucks in Reno. In 2009, there were 24. In 2008, there were 18.
And these days, established restaurants are extending their business to the roads - taking their cooks to the customers.
Kavner says Cheeseburger Island Style decided to expand into truck-style catering because: "We thought there was a great need in the Reno area."
Cheeseburger Island Style takes calls from local businesses with hungry workers to decide where to set up shop on any given day.
"I think it's nice because it's real close to my office," said Cliff Young, who is becoming a regular food truck customer. "It's just really quick. You get a good quality meal without having to go into a restaurant and wait around. Back at my office in 20 minutes."
Antonio Gutierrez cruised into the business six months ago. He noticed taco trucks were parking in front of his mother's Mexican food restaurant and stealing customers.
"I noticed they wanted to buy food faster and there was an opportunity for me to buy a truck," he said. He now operates Tacos El Pueblo on the corner of Vassar St. and Wells Ave. in Reno. "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."
And these trucks are getting easier to follow. There are websites that help track them down. Some restaurants even use Twitter to let customers know where they're going to be.
