RENO, NV - The Microsoft Licensing buildings in Reno were swarming with young women on Tuesday. The company hosted its first Digigirlz Days event - which drew about 60 girls to the offices.
The goal: to introduce the girls to hi-tech careers.
The day was full of seminars. The young women, ages 12 to 18, got lessons in everything from movie-making to game development to cybersafety. They also had a chance to meet female Microsoft employees who are at the top of their game.
Autumn Goddard, a high school freshman, said she had a great time. She's considering entering the technology field and is mulling over a career in game development.
Cindy Healy, who works as director of operations for Microsoft Licensing, says events like this one are important to help get rid of the stigma that tech industry jobs are just for men.
She said that, in recent years, the percentage of women graduating with bachelor's degrees in Computer Science is on the decline.
At the University of Nevada Reno, Professor Fred Harris, who teaches Computer Science and Engineering, says it's important to get young people interested in math and science at a young age. He applauds experiences like this one.
The Digigirlz Days event attracted young middle schoolers and high schoolers from around Reno. This was the first time Microsoft Licensing put on the event.
