Update:As of 12:30pm, there were 500 people in line for vaccinations. WCHD expects to serve about 600 people today.

The Washoe County Health District is holding its first swine flu clinic this week -- only those at highest-risk for the virus may get vaccinations, which are offered for free.

Highest risk groups are:

  • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel

  • Pregnant women

  • Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age

  • All people from 6 months through 24 years of age

  • Persons aged 25 through 64 years who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza

The vaccination clinic will take place on Thursday, October 22nd at the Washoe County Administrative Complex. 1001 East Ninth Street, Reno NV, building B, 1st floor. The clinic will run 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Two more high-risk clinics will be held October 27 and 29... same time and place.

You may also be able to get the vaccine at your doctor's office, but private health facilities may charge you around $20 to administer it.

"It's been going through our office like a plague and we've had several people out," Sarah Johnson of Reno said.

Johnson said she probably won't get vaccinated against the swine flu -- she's already had it.

"I was sicker than I can ever remember being... Three days... I'm never sick for three days."

"We have the capability of pushing through about a hundred vaccination an hour," Judy Davis of the Washoe County District Health Department said. The plan is to give vaccinations for six hours Thursday, she said.

Only highest-risk groups may get the vaccination at this time -- they will be required to show ID and sign a form certifying they are at highest risk, Davis said.

Depending on the demand of those groups, and how much vaccine is supplied by the government, eventually it's expected shot clinics will be open to everyone. Davis said she does not know when that will be.

The Health District recommends everyone get inoculated, but some say swine flu is more hype than a legitimate worry.

"I think it's just another flu I didn't get the flu last year I don't plan on getting the swine flu this year," Ben Greg of Reno said.

Two people have died from Swine Flu in Washoe County, health officials said.

I have not been down to the clinic yet to get a shot for my young daughter. I wondered if citizenship was being verified prior to immunization. I would hate to learn that US citizens were unable to get the shot when illegal immigrants were protected.

Does anyone know if their will be any H1N1 mist/shot clinics in rural areas? Some of us in the family are high risk and traveling is not always easy. I would hate to drive the 3 hour round trip and have Reno run out or we be denied. Like Churchill County? I am sure Lyon County and other rural areas are wondering the same thing.
