RENO, NV - She loves an adrenaline rush, and she loves to volunteer her time for those less fortunate in our community. And 16 year old Erika needs a family to foster her until they can adopt her.
We met at Midtown’s Picasso & Wine to paint our masterpieces. They are called A Forever Tree where we can write any word in the root of a tree that we choose to be our personal mantra.
Erika’s artistic talents don’t just extend to canvas. She loves writing poetry and short stories. After spending a couple hours with her, it’s easy to see she is an old soul who loves to take care of others. In fact, she spends her free time volunteering with her church to help the hungry in our community.
“I go to the food bank, and I go to Saint Vincent's and I package food and help donate it,” Erika says.
One of Erika’s favorite hobbies has had to be put on hold right now: riding her dirt bike.
“Being a foster kid, you can't have one,” she explains, “because it's against social services rules.”
Erika is quite accomplished at racing motocross.
“I've won 12 trophies and one medal, and they're all in my room.” But Erika says the last time she sat on a dirt bike was probably four or five years ago.
When asked what she feels on a dirt bike, Erika’s answer is “a lot of, rush.”
Erika is also quite the mechanic.
“I mostly work on dirt bikes. Cars, I can work on engines, I can work on the transmission. I'm learning how to take apart and put back together a small engine.”
Erika wants to use her talents for our country as an auto mechanic or welder in the Marines. She is currently in the Navy ROTC at her school. Which, she says will help her in the future.
“If I do four years of ROTC, complete the whole four years, then I get to enlist as a higher rank in the Marines.”
Why the Marine Corps? Erika says because “they're tougher on you. You build more muscle… I just feel they're a little bit better on you. Not easier. Tougher on you. Gives you more discipline.”
