Female Lawmakers Condemn Oscar Host

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Two female California state lawmakers are condemning Oscar host Seth MacFarlane's comments during last week's awards presentation as degrading toward women and are asking the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to use better judgment in the future.

Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal and Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, who lead the Legislature's women's caucus, sent a letter Tuesday to Academy President Hawk Koch requesting that the organization disavow MacFarlane's behavior.

They noted one of MacFarlane's skits in which he was "singing about 'boobs' during a film's rape scene" and said the host "crossed the line from humor to misogyny."

Lowenthal and Jackson, both Democrats, asked Koch to respond. A spokeswoman said the Academy had no immediate comment on their letter.
